Web design pulls from many different schools of thought in the development and implementation of the pages ultimately designed. It is possible to use creative graphics imposed over text for a creative look, but in the end it will not help achieve positive site rankings. You can employ Flash design and still find a lackluster response by search engines. You can even develop beautiful brochures that are downloadable by Portable Document Files (pdf) and have little positive gain in site rankings.
Why does all this work seem fruitless? The answer lies in the title of this article. In each case the information presented is absolutely unsearchable by search engines.
To be clear, the content on a web page is only useful to Search Engine Optimization (SEO) purposes if the content that is read is a text format. If the content is not text it will have no value to your SEO objectives.
Text in JPG (or other graphic file)
This method of showing text has been around the longest and is probably the least used today. Essentially the premise is to create text and graphics, save them as a photographic element and then place them on the website. It would be much better to place all text in the body of your web page and then insert optimized photos throughout the text.
Portable Document File
Some web designers may want to deliver an attractive brochure, manual, or other document as a pdf file that is downloadable by the end user. This does, in fact, provide a great tool for those individuals that may already know of the file and a download in a fully produced format is just what they need. However, if the text would benefit your website in SEO strategies you might consider allowing a text version to appear on your site with an alternate pdf download for those who need it.
If you are concerned about copyright infringement you may not want to make the full text available online. In this case you should develop a keyword rich summary that will be searchable while refraining from publishing the full text (except in a non-altering pdf).
Flash
The use of flash combines great imagery with audio and animation, however, this creative design feature does not assist search engines in ranking your site in more favorable ways.
Some sites are developing a hybrid site. The first side of the website is pure Flash, with the other side is text driven. In this case the end user has the opportunity to utilize all the features of Flash while the text driven side provides search engines with all the searchable information needed for positive site rankings.
Today’’s rule of thumb - when seeking improved site rankings, use text.

For future webmasters wanting to put up a website there are actually 3 different options:
1. You can either hire a web developer to get the
job done or
2. You can simply design your website entirely by yourself or
3. You can start off purchasing one or more website templates
In the first case you will need at least hundreds of dollars, if not thousands to realize your online manifestations. On top of that you need to find a web developer that is perfectly capable of translating your ideas into a jaw dropping design.
The second scenario requires that you either have great web developer skills or you have set your mind to becoming web design savvy plus you have lots of spare time.
Suppose you don”t have hundreds of dollars and you absolutely don”t feel like learning all the ins and outs of higher level web design. Well… worry not, since there is always the third and best option of buying a website template.
Templates come cheap nowadays plus they save you lots of time and effort getting exactly the type of design you really like. Here are some tips for finding the right template for your own personal website.
- Beware of choosing a template that does not really reflect what you first had in mind. Start off by defining the purpose of your website, set its goals!
- Browse the relevant categories (most template sites are perfectly categorized) and compare the ones that come closest to your ideas and plans.
- Try not to pick a template that is very popular since it does not do any good to your credibility when many different people chose the same template before you. I don”t think this needs any further explanation…
- For the above reason you should always buy a customizable template so you can give it your own personal touch, at least by changing the graphics. But beware: don”t overdo it, don”t try to completely redesign the template because you don”t want to pass over the initial purpose of a template: saving you time and effort!
- Once you have found 3 to 5 templates that suit your ideas, start the process of elimination. Compare, eliminate, compare, eliminate until you are confident you have found the (almost) perfect website template to serve your purpose and maybe even more important, your audience.
- Finally give the template some uniqueness, at least by altering the graphics! Change some text, use synonyms, add some content of your own. To make a long story short: make it yours. Divide your template in small bite size chunks and make some alterations to every part, but once again: don”t overdo things!

Can your visitors find what they are looking for on your web site with one or two clicks? Easy navigation is essential to keep visitors at your site and turn them into buyers. Follow these 13 steps to make your web pages easy to navigate and compel prospective buyers to explore your web site.
1. Provide plenty of links on your web site’’s home page, giving an overview of your web site’’s content and providing choices for your visitors.
2. Put clear navigation options at the top or left of your web pages, so visitors see them right away. Users may not scroll through lengthy pages. In addition, add a “Go Back to Top” button at the end of long pages.
3. Provide navigation links to your home page, main sections, order page, contact page, and product pages on every page. Potential buyers may not read your pages in the sequence you would like them to.
4. Make navigation simple and consistent throughout your web site. Keep the style and location of your navigation buttons and links the same on every page.
5. Use simple terms for your navigation buttons and links that your visitors will recognize such as “home,” “order,” and “contact.”
6. Use standard underlined hyperlinks for instant recognition. The standard color for non-visited links is blue. Use a different link color for visited links.
7. Include a sitemap (table of contents) if your site has more than 20 pages. Creating a sitemap may also improve your search engine ranking.
8. Put your URL and email address on every page.
9. Turn links into benefit-oriented headlines and include action verbs to motivate potential buyers to click on your links. For example, “Want to get your hands on these powerful copy enhancers? Enter your email address here and receive free Copy Doodles that are guaranteed to enhance your sales letters and boost response.
10. Describe your graphics and navigation buttons in ALT tags (alternative text describing your images for visitors who browse your site with the images turned off).
11. Avoid “entry” pages (home pages with animation) visitors have to click on to enter the site because they don”t indicate what your site is about.
12. Avoid frames, drop-down menus, and pop-up windows. They may confuse visitors.
13. Make sure all links work.

Web pages with readable text will generate more sales than fancy-looking pages that are hard to read. Follow these design tips and not only will your web pages be easier to read, but you”ll keep potential buyers at your site and position yourself to increase sales.
Keep Pages Short — Especially Your Home Page
* Put important content at the top of your pages so it’’s visible to visitors immediately. Users may not scroll through lengthy pages.
* In general, limit the length of a web page to two screens.
* Split up long pages into several pages.
Layout
* Use left aligned text rather than justified text.
* Write short paragraphs (2-5 lines).
* Limit the width of your web pages to fit your visitors” monitors. Your visitors don”t want to scroll left to right to see your content.
* Keep the look, layout, navigation, typefaces, and colors consistent on all pages.
Break up Copy
* Break up long text with white space, color, columns, lines, and graphics.
* Break up copy into easy-to-read sections
* Use subheadings and bulleted lists to highlight benefits.
* Draw attention to important information with hand-written text and hand-drawn arrows, circles and other copy doodles. Do this sparingly to avoid a cluttered look.
Colors
* Use color sparingly. Too much color can be distracting.
* Select a background color that contrasts with the text color to make your content stand out.
* Avoid blue backgrounds when using blue links (the standard link color).
* Avoid dark backgrounds. Dark text on a light background is easy to read.
* Avoid text on multi-colored background images. Such background images will decrease the readability of your text.
* Use web-friendly colors. Colors that look bright on your monitor may appear dark on someone else’’s and make your message unreadable.
Typography
* Limit the use of small type, reverse type (white text on dark background), and italics.
* Avoid using UPPER CASE in your body copy.
* Limit the number of fonts in a web site to a maximum of three (proferably only two).
* Use a type size that is geared to your target audience. For instance, use larger type for older readers.
* Emphasize important words, headlines, and sentences by using color, bold, and different text sizes. But do so sparingly. Too much bold or color reduces the impact.
* Avoid underlining. Readers might think your underlined words or sentences are links.
* Use standard fonts such as Arial, Verdana, and Times New Roman. If you”re using fonts your viewers don”t have on their computers, their browsers will substitute those fonts and your web pages will look different on their computers than you intended them to look.
* Avoid special characters like curly quotes, curly apostrophes, n-dashes, and m-dashes. These characters may convert into bogus characters on web sites.
* Use fonts that are appropriate for your subject matter and your audience.
Images and Graphics
* Use images and graphics that support your sales message.
* Keep animation, blinking text, and scrolling text to a minimum. They distract the reader from focusing on your text.
Check Your Pages
Web pages may look different on your visitors” computers, depending on their computer, monitor, browser, and fonts. What may look great with one browser may look unprofessional with another. View your web pages with different browsers, computers, platforms (PC and Mac), screen resolutions, and settings. Statistics indicate that visitors use a wide variety of browsers and platforms.

Does making money from a website seem a little daunting? Well, actually, if you know what to do, it really is quite easy. If your website is not making money there are a few changes you can make to bring in a profit.
The appearance of the website itself may be what is causing you to lose money.
There are certain expectations that people have of a website when they are surfing. They expect to see the layout in a particular way and if you go against what is perceived as the “norm” for a website, people are going to leave your site thinking there is a problem.
When this happens, you have lost a sale or a potential prospect for your affiliate program.
It is imperative that you do not leave a huge blank spot on your site. Huge chunks of white space are not attractive to users and it appears as if something is missing from the site.
You can use white space to your advantage however, by not cluttering your site. Keep the graphics to a minimum. Have a clear masthead along the top of the site or the left hand side. That is where user tend to look first.
All pictures and graphics should be spaced reasonably without leaving a huge gaping white block. Use a few ads as pictures to up your Google rating.
When you are involved as an affiliate with various programs, this will give you plenty of links and ads to place in areas where there is nothing else.
Thus also creating an additional stream of income when your site is visited and your program is offered. Make sure that what you are promoting is relevant to the title on your webpage.
In other words, if you are promoting software, and your title page is “Software To Help The Affiliate Marketer” or whatever, you don”t want to have links for e-books unless the e-books are specific to the software you are promoting.
Google Search is becoming a hot item to have on a website. Stick one of those on your site and user will be able to search the Net, and your site as well.
Google Adwords is a definate must if you are serious about making money with your website. Sign up is free and very easy. You will make money from page impressions and when people click on the particular adsense links.
Keep track of earnings by logging into your accout on occassion.
Create link backs to your site by aligning up with other webmasters that are promoting the same thing you are. You put a link of their site and you put theirs on yours.
You don”t have to worry about losing sales because you will make money from visitors being on your site because some visitors are going to buy your products.
This is a great way to increase your Google ranking and draw user that normally would not find your site, especially if it is a new site.
Clicking on your own ads is a complete waste of time and frankly it is cheating. You will be too busy generating traffic to your site that you will not have time to click the ads enough to make any substantial money.
Word of mouth is the great method starting out to let everyone you know you have a website. Tell everyone and e-mail everyone you know and send the link to your site so they can immediately be taken to your site when they click on the link. Some will visit, some won”t.
Patience is a virtue - and when you are starting your business with a new website, it is going to take some time to attract those visitors.
It is important that your site is always maintained to make sure you do not have any broken links and replacing ads on occasion to ad fresh content.
Once you get the hang of your first site, it is a great idea to have another one, perhaps a really great affiliate website that you can customize and make changes too. This will allow you to link from one site to another further creating additional revenue.
